Lahore police made the 
                        highest embezzlement, around Rs 51.3 million, in different 
                        funds as compared to other Punjab districts, revealed 
                        a Home Department audit report for 2001-2002.
                      The report accused the 
                        inspector general of police (IGP) Punjab of embezzling 
                        Rs 1,193,085 in irregular lapses and Rs 548,876 in irregular 
                        expenditures.
                      The report accused the 
                        deputy inspector general of Traffic police (DIG) Punjab 
                        of embezzling Rs 561,000 in the irregular repair of vehicles 
                        and Rs 523,990 in the irregular purchase of stationery. 
                        The report accused 
                        DIG Police Sargodha of embezzling Rs 61,563 in excess 
                        of the limit of telephone calls. A total of Rs 51,335,206 
                        was found embezzled in Lahore district. The report accused 
                        the Senior Superintendent of Police of having spent irregular 
                        amounts of Rs 981,384 (vehicle repairs), Rs 956,004 (store 
                        articles and stationery), Rs 311,690 (house rent allowance), 
                        Rs 1,691,604 (ration allowance), Rs 483,411 (telephone 
                        usage), Rs 4,014,897 (expense on police guards), Rs 1,176,781 
                        (non- deduction of sales tax), Rs 5,916,471 (fuel expense), 
                        Rs 131,427 (purchase of bed and boxes), Rs 105,318 (machinery 
                        and equipment repair), Rs 1,598,518 (other purchases), 
                        Rs 364,161 (building repairs) and Rs 18,062,710 were unaccounted 
                        for.
                      The report also accused 
                        Superintendent of Police (SP) for Punjab Motor Transport 
                        for Rs 6,615,837 (lapse of funds), Rs 6,709,632 (expenditure 
                        above allocated budget), Rs 474,120 (fuel usage), Rs 418,819 
                        (POL), Rs 
                        121,048 (other purchases) and Rs 263,151 for irregular 
                        purchase of stationery.
                      It also accused Deputy 
                        Superintendent of Police (DSP) for Lahore Fingerprint 
                        Bureau for Rs 594,448 (expenditure above allocated budget) 
                        and the DSP for Lahore Range Reserve for Rs 50,198 (pays 
                        and 
                        allowances) and Rs 37,630 (telephone usage).
